Intelligent dual reader controller from Lenel

Rochester, New York (USA)

LNL-2220

Lenel Systems International has released the Lenel intelligent dual eader controller (LNL- 2220), which combines an advanced, network-enabled intelligent system controller with a fullfeatured, two-door reader interface module.

Advanced access control system have traditionally consisted of several layers of hardware, with each layer comprised of multiple components. By eliminating the separate controller layer entirely, the LNL-2220 introduces a new class of device that makes access control simpler, more powerful and more reliable. Lenel, a global
leader in software and integrated security systems for government and commercial markets, is part of UTC Fire & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX).

"The LNL-2220 revolutionizes access control system architecture by allowing ethernet connection directly from an entry location to the server, while providing the security, functionality, and modularity of Lenel's proven hardware platform. It's a complete out of the box solution, with unmatched functionally, performance and value" says David Weinbach, Lenel's product manager for access control solutions.

Utilizing native ethernet communication, the LNL-2220 offers a direct connection to the security network and provides up to eight times the throughput of serial-to-ethernet conversion utilized by previous generation devices. Benefits include faster data downloads, an increase in performance, reduced installation time, fewer connections and greater reliability. The LNL-2220 also makes IT networks less susceptible to attacks by extending the security LAN to the edge of the enterprise, but not beyond it.

On-board reader ports support Data1/Data0, Clock/Data, F2F and new open supervised device protocol (OSDP) communications. OSDP, the first open standard that allows bidirectional communication with access control readers, was developed jointly by Lenel and several other access control equipment suppliers. Using bidirectional communication, reader health can be continuously monitored, and reader outputs such as LEDs, sounders and text displays can be controlled in real time.

The LNL-2220 offers total flexibility in choice of reader brand, technology and form factor, and the broadest support for biometric and smart card technologies in the industry. Up to 32 devices (64 readers) can be connected to the downstream RS-485 port, providing an inherent growth path. The LNL-2220 is scalable for use in access control applications of any size.

The LNL-2220 provides one of the most fault-tolerant solutions available, and the highest level of offline performance possible. In the event of loss of connectivity, the LNL- 2220's controller logs all events, and enables all local functionality to continue unimpaired until the server connection is restored.

Support for the LNL-2220 is part of a broad range of access control technology enhancements contained in the forthcoming OnGuard 2006 technology update.
