Portable thermal imaging camera for night vision applications

Kent, UK

FLIR has released their FlashSight, a brand new portable thermal imaging camera for night vision applications.

Infrared and GPS technologies have followed parallel development paths. Both have their roots in military applications and just as GPS systems have become commonplace in the consumer marketplace the commercialisation of infrared continues apace to the same end.

FLIR Systems, the world's largest manufacturer of infrared, recently broke new ground by participating in its first consumer electronics show in the US. And one of the new products featured was FlashSight a brand new portable thermal imaging camera for night vision applications.

Aimed at security and surveillance for mobile platforms and law enforcement applications, this infrared camera is designed for anyone who wants assured night sight whatever the weather.

Without the need for any illumination it provides clear images in total darkness, through light fog, smoke, rain and snow. Indeed Flashsight with an optional 50mm lens needs just 6 pixels on target to detect an intruder at 2.2km. This performance is thanks to FLIR Systems' advanced image processing that delivers excellent contrast regardless of scene dynamics.

Flashsight runs for over four hours on standard AA batteries and has a bellows eye cup so that the user can remain covert. It will capture and internally store up to 70 images which can then be used evidentially. The USB 2.0 adaptor cable supplied with the camera allows image transfer from Flashsight to a PC.

To provide good situational awareness the camera comes with a standard 30mm, 13° field of view. The alternative factory-fitted choice of 50mm lens allows greater detail to be seen across a longer range. Weighing just 1 kg this rugged handheld camera is both comfortable and easy to use.

The shock-resistant FlashSight is IP65 rated and operates between -32°C and 55°C. The matt black housing does not illuminate or reflect light enhancing this camera's suitability for covert surveillance.
