DHL logistics hub relies on Datalogic

Bologna, Italy

Datalogic S.p.A. is consolidating its already established position in transportation and logistics with a new deployment for DHL Express, worldwide leader in express courier services.
The installation is Datalogic’s camera-based solution for the newest DHL Express Logistic Hub in Europe. DHL needed to realise a sorting system in its facility at Carpiano (Milan, Italy), the biggest Italian hub, and one of the main ones in Europe. The project, completed in March 2012, involves a new system for sorting more than 15.000 packages per hour towards more than 100 destinations via a 1.5 km belt and cross-sorter conveying system provided by the Italian System Integrator Selex Elsag, a Finmeccanica company.

At the heart of the powerful integrated system is Datalogic’s NVS9000 solution, based on image capturing technology offering parcels’ identification through bar code, integration with volume measurement and video coding. High performance and maximum flexibility have been demonstrated as the major advantage of NVS9000 systems when challenged by the demanding sorting process, such as at DHL’s hub in Carpiano, where different NVS9000 reading tunnels have been installed. This involves the deployment of more than 40 NVS9000 camera systems, three dimensioner devices and a complete video coding system. It furthermore confirms Datalogic’s capability to supply complex, complete and high value solutions in the challenging transportation and logistics market.

Mario Bardotti, project leader of Selex Elsag, is enthusiastic about Datalogic solution: “We have chosen Datalogic for its flexibility and willingness to understand and develop a complex custom solution that integrates perfectly into our system,” he said.

Datalogic’s technological and industry expertise addresses demands from major customers, such as DHL Express, by maximizing the value of transportation through properly utilised bar code scanning technology that increases the speed, accuracy and quality of their services. “In today’s context of global mobility, there are ever-increasing challenges for transportation operators and logistics providers to ensure people and goods travel to and from their destinations safely and efficiently,” said Datalogic Group CEO, Mauro Sacchetto. “The total solutions provided by our Group meet the global demand for reducing the impact, which delays, losses and insufficient tracking measures can have on any business,” he added.
