Derwent Shed Light on the Issue at IFSEC

Cramlington (UK)

The topical issue of Light Pollution will be highlighted by Derwent at IFSEC, where the company will lead a seminar entitled "Light Pollution - Why the Security Industry Needs to Know More" at the Security Installer Theatre on Monday 8th May, 12.45pm.

"Derwent were first to bring to the industry's attention new UK legislation concerning Light Pollution and how it will affect the way security lighting is specified and installed," says Steve Devlin, Derwent's UK Field Sales Engineer who will be leading the seminar.
Light Pollution, defined as the excessive or inappropriate use of external visible lighting -has been a newsworthy item in past weeks, in response to the new "Clean Neighbourhoods and Environments Act 2005", which came into force early April 2006. It gives Local Authorites the power to impose orders to "put right" badly designed lighting schemes and to fine companies and individuals who fail to do so. Security lighting, in particular the practice of flood lighting, has been identified as a major contributor to light pollution.
The seminar will examine the new legislation and offers security professionals practical advice on designing security lighting to prevent light pollution. This includes using low wattage directional illumination, angling outdoor security lights downwards and fitting hoods to minimise light spill and glare. At night protect premises using a surveillance system illuminated by invisible Infra-Red.
"Based on years of expertise in the field, Derwent truly believe that Infra-Red is the best and most powerful solution for night-time CCTV illumination" says Devlin. "Unlike the alternative - visible white lighting - all that is visible from a Derwent lamp is an unobtrusive red glow, at higher wavelengths the light becomes totally covert".
The seminar will be of interest to anyone involved in designing, specifying or installing 24 hour CCTV systems.
