Commenced in 1998 and aimed to create world class roads with uninterrupted traffic flow in a country where 80 percent of passenger traffic and 65 percent of freight is totally dependent on the road infrastructure, the Indian National Highways Development Project (NHDP) is one of the world's largest highways projects. With a network covering some 3.314 million Km of roadways (2.1 Million Miles) the road infrastructure is the main catalyst for development of key sectors of the economy in India. Although the National Highways "only" covers around 2% of the roads, they total a massive 66,590 km carrying around 40% of the total traffic across the length and breadth of the country.

In 2007, AMG supplied their fibre optic transmission system, which integrates Ethernet and low speed data with high quality uncompressed video to 5 new toll roads in India. The 2 new projects concern Bangalore elevated Highway on NH7 with a stretch of 25 km and the Salem - Kumarpalyam - Chengapalli stretch of approx 100 km on NH47.

From the onset the National Highways Agency of India (NHAI) decided to propose an advanced Traffic Management Solution (HTMS) for the NHDP and the solution also applies to the 2 new highway stretches.

Ms. Sheetal Shanbhag, head sales & marketing, ITS Systems for EFKON India explains, "The AMG solution will not only transmit uncompressed Digital CCTV images to the control centres and control signals back to manipulate the roadside PTZ cameras, it will also be used to carry the signals for Weather Stations, Variable Message Signs (VMS), and Advance Traffic Counters and Classifiers (ATCC). The solution is dual redundant as it is considered to be observation critical 24 hours a day. The control centre for the NH7 project is situated at one end of the stretch, where for NH47 it's located in the middle of the stretch, so we have to transmit the signals over long distances".
