Video management system with sophisticated ergonomics

Regensburg, Germany

With the VMC-1 "Eagle", a video management centre has been developed, which by far exceeds the functionality as well as the ergonomics of standard industrially manufactured keyboards, according to Dallmeier Electronic, the designer and manufacturer of the product.

Sophisticated ergonomics and a classic, timeless design allow for durable and efficient operation. Product designers analysed the typical motion patterns of security operators during months of field tests. The lessons learned were then directly incorporated in the development of the product, resulting in a man-machine interface which guarantees the highest possible user-friendliness.

With the "Eagle", Dallmeier is set to revolutionise the market for video management hardware. In close cooperation with experienced users from the security industry and as a result of practice-oriented product research, a top-class video management centre has been developed which by far surpasses the performance of standard, industrially-manufactured keyboards.

The video management centre "Eagle" is modular in its structure and thus highly flexible. The individual components, whether it's the keypad, the joystick or the jog-shuttle, may be positioned according to individual preferences and are therefore equally well-suited for both left- and right-handed operators. Moreover it is also possible to use the individual components as freely programmable stand-alone devices.

The positioning of the control keys directly around the joystick or the jog-shuttle is particularly user-friendly as the groups of keys almost automatically guide the fingers through the operations. Many of the control keys are freely allocable, allowing the operator to suit the VMC-1 to his or her individual mode of operation.

Features:
• Flexible positioning of the modules (suited for right- and left-handed operators).
• Individual modules can be used as stand-alone devices.
• 6" TFT monitor for picture display.
• 3 axis joystick.
• Plain, low-maintenance surface.
• Ergonomic operation thanks to intelligent design.
• Versatile uses possible due to its unique, high-quality style.

The jog-shuttle is ideally suited for quickly finding a specific image within a video sequence. By rotating the central jog-dial the security operator can conveniently move through individual frames. The scenes can then be replayed forwards or backwards at different speeds, using the shuttle-ring surrounding the jog-shuttle. It is therefore easy for the operator to review and conclusively clarify certain situations.

Using the joystick, functional cameras can be conveniently controlled since pan, tilt and zoom movements can be carried out intuitively. With just a single click on the joystick button the camera automatically moves back into its home position. If the mode is switched, the joystick can also be used as a mouse, which allows an easy menu control. The positioning of the control keys for the shutter, the focus or the zoom mechanisms, directly around the joystick is particularly user-friendly as the groups of keys almost automatically guide the fingers through the operations.

The Dallmeier video management centre VMC-1 features an interactive 6" LCD TFT monitor (640 x 480 pixels) which allows for the display of live pictures as well as recorded footage. Furthermore, the complete management system, such as position plans or search functions, can be displayed on the monitor, giving the operator an over-view of the whole system at any time.

The overall shape of the keypad with its user-friendly curvature allow for an ergonomically optimal hand position, with the smoothed off edges further enhancing the device's usability. The keypad owes its slim side-view to particular ingenuity in design as the large parts were moved to the centre giving the product a "floating" appearance. The silver-coloured sub-shell nestles up to the upper half of the casing like a blanket, contributing to the special "slim-line" look when viewed from the side. The keys and hand rests are rubberised so as to achieve a smooth velvet feel. Different surface designs visually divide the overall system into various segments creating a clear structure of the video management system despite its spacious surface area.

For ergonomic reasons, the control keys have purposely been given a larger layout. The centres of the keys are of contrasting colour to the surface, not only creating a high-class look but also making it easier to work in all environments, including dimly lit security control rooms.
