Two new card reader mounting options for Fastlane

Ashford, Middlesex (UK)

There are now two new card reader mounting options for Fastlane which are designed to help speed up throughput. For sites with slower access control systems there is the Card Reader Mount Post. This can be used to locate the reader further away from the barrier. The further away the card reader is from the barrier means that it will take the authorised person longer to cover that distance therefore allowing more time for the access system to respond to an authorised card. The end result is that by the time the authorised person reaches the barrier it should have been retracted. The Card Reader Mount Post in effect lengthens the lane allowing for a smother and faster throughput of authorised people for sites with a slower access system. The slower the system the further away the Card Reader Mount Post should be located.

Many sites are now using HID iClass readers but one of the disadvantages of Smart Cards, according to IDL, is that the read range is quite short. Normally we recommend cards with a short read range are externally mounted using a card reader mounting block to make them easier to use and the readers performance is not effected by the surrounding metal work. There is now a 3rd option of mounting an R10 iClass reader partially embedded in the reader window. This gives the user a visible target to present their card, and improves the read range and throughput of the system, whilst also having a more discrete finish than an external card reader mounting block therefore maintaining the aesthetics of the Fastlane enclosure.
Both of these solutions have the added advantage that as the reader is externally mounted the user will easily recognise the card reader from elsewhere in the building and as such the use of the turnstiles will be more intuitive as there is a more natural "target" for the user to see than if the reader is located inside the pedestal.
