Smooth implementation of security measures at Abu Dhabi international airport

Abu Dhabi, UAE

Abu Dhabi international airport has reported a smooth implementation of the new measures restricting the amount of liquids, aerosols, and gels (LAG) that passengers can carry onboard as part of their hand-carry luggage.

The new rules went into force at Abu Dhabi international airport terminal 2 from June 30th. The airport operations department described the implementation as "generally smooth". "Traffic flow was smooth, and all flights left perfectly on time, thanks to the collective efforts of all organizations operating at the airport," it said.

Ahead of implementation, Abu Dhabi airports company (ADAC) had launched an intensive orientation campaign that involved travel agents, carriers, and the public. Brochures were disseminated and commercials run in different languages to tune in passengers to the new measures.

On the first day of implementation, passengers were greeted with customer service teams of ADAC and a group of "student ambassadors" who ensured that passengers understood and complied with the new measures.

Information panels were set up in various locations, such as the departure check-In hall and screening points, to inform and remind passengers of the new restrictions. Pamphlets on the new restrictions are available for passengers' ready reference and regular announcements are being made. Also, tables have been set up for passengers who may need to re-pack their belongings.

"Most of the passengers were aware of the new rules, and for the few who were not, the customer service teams were there to give a hand," Operations department informed.

To ensure smooth processing of travel formalities, passengers have been advised to check-in all liquids, aerosols and gels items not required during their flight in their check-in luggage. Liquids, aerosols and gels required during the flight should be packed in accordance with the new restrictions, before passengers arrive at the airport.

The restrictions are:

- Liquids, aerosols and gels must be in containers with a maximum capacity of not more than 100ml each. Liquids, aerosols and gels in containers larger than 100ml will not be accepted, even if the container is partially-filled.
- Containers must be placed in a transparent re-sealable plastic bag with a maximum capacity not exceeding 1-litre. These containers must fit comfortably within the transparent re-sealable plastic bag, which must be completely closed.
- Each passenger is allowed to carry only one transparent re-sealable plastic bag, which must be presented separately for screening; Exemptions will be made for medications, baby food and special dietary items.
