Physical security should not be overshadowed by cyber threats

Dubai, U.A.E

The 11th International Oil & Gas Security Summit, OGS, will take place from the 24th - 25th April in Dubai, and a number of important current and rising risks, such as how the integration of IT and OT systems is affecting physical security, will be discussed at the event.

Cyber threats continue to dominate discussions in the oil and gas industry given how ever-present technology is in today’s infrastructure.  However, incidents such as the alleged bombing of pipelines in Kuzhestan (Iran) are making a clear point - the real damage is inflicted in the physical world.

With this in mind, the physical security concerns of oil and gas infrastructure, can never be overlooked and the OGS conference will be focusing on these issues in April.

A series of seminars will be conducted by high profile speakers over the two information packed days.  The Physical Security Stream of discussions will start with a keynote presentation on the global geostrategic outlook and will look at how recent political and economic developments might affect security in the energy industry,

Day 1 will begin on a session with crisis management, and analysis on the readiness level of oil companies.  Working towards an effective implementation of intelligence-sharing tools between the Gulf Countries, analysing the implications of NIMBY inoperational security, and an update on HSE affecting operational procedures in offshore environments will also be included in the session discussions on day one.

Day 2, on the 25th April will begin with a case study on the hijacking of an oil rig.  This will then be followed by discussions on the application of military counter terrorism measures in the protection of critical infrastructure; an assessment on the application of the latest probabilistic risk management models within energy physical security, and finally, early warning mechanisms currently available in the Gulf countries.
