Making the right connection for digital CCTV

Hückelhoven (Germany)

In the IP environment interoperability is now seen as a key feature when customers are selecting a CCTV solution. Costs can be reduced and performance improved if the components of a system interact easily, a requirement which Dedicated Micros has addressed by introducing sophisticated NetVu Connected technology across its product range. With the latest NetVu Connected products - enterprise end to end IP CCTV to entry level solutions - installers and end users are able to connect to real business benefits that offer guaranteed compatibility, reduced installation and commissioning times and ensure an ease of use unparalleled in the industry.

All products carrying the NetVu Connected mark have been designed to provide seamless connectivity and scalability whilst offering integration and control from an intuitive user interface irrespective of user location. This focus on interoperability offers the potential for the efficiency of CCTV solutions to be improved, allowing images to be distributed and accessed from any NetVu Connected product and viewed on any screen, from any moment in time anywhere in the world.

Remote Viewing
One of the most recent additions to the NetVu Connected product range from Dedicated Micros is NetVu Console, a powerful remote viewing station which offers installers and end users a non- PC based alternative to remote viewing and telemetry control over the network.
Designed to have minimal installation requirements, the NetVu Console consists of a traditional telemetry KBS3A keyboard and a single channel decoder unit, which, when combined with a standard monitor provides a remote viewing point on the CCTV system such as a guard station in the outer reaches of a building complex. The solution is simply connected to any NetVu Connected DVR or Server via an IP connection.
The NetVu Console delivers an extremely flexible embedded solution so additional control stations can be rapidly deployed for operators/security guards - with ruggedised, advanced, joystick control of networked CCTV - without the need to retrain. Dedicated Micros sees NetVu Console as bridging the gap between the security and IT worlds, providing an opportunity for installers and end users, new to the IP environment to lever the benefits of networked CCTV without the associated learning curve.
Key features of the NetVu Console include: the ability for up to 256 cameras to be controlled and monitored from one remote point; IP to analogue conversion so composite monitors can be used; simple network connection via Ethernet; NetVu Connected technology supports integration with other NetVu connected products; transparent telemetry control through an associated DVR; a 3-axis joystick for pan, tilt and zoom functionality; an onboard LCD identifies the connected unit name and number and additional telemetry buttons ensure that 3rd Party PTZ or dome cameras can be accessed and controlled via the keyboard.

Designs on Domes
Dedicated Micros has also unveiled new NetVu Connected IP versions of its Dennard 2060 outdoor and 2040 indoor domes. The IP Domes have been designed to deliver all of the features and functionality of the existing Dennard units, whilst offering the advantages of built-in IP connectivity, out of the box, so allowing them to be controlled and recorded directly over an IP network. They can be dropped straight into a networked environment with minimal set-up; because they are NetVu Connected the new IP Domes deeply integrate with Dedicated Micros DVRs and Servers, meaning that IP transmission settings can be configured remotely, automatically.
Other key features of the ruggedised 2060 outdoor and 2040 indoor IP enabled domes include: a high quality colour camera offering x18 optical zoom (x26 option on 2060 only); up to 24 privacy zones; an optically correct, impact resistant hemisphere and a robust internal die-cast mechanism supporting quick install and release for hot-swap replacement; preset positions and tour facilities and optimised compatibility with Dedicated Micros controllers.

Flexible Recording
Dedicated Micros is also looking to the future with its latest generation of network capable DVRs such as the Digital Sprite 2 with an embedded NetVu Connected Trans-Coding engine enabling MultiMode Recording. Essentially this is the capability to record at the resolution, quality, type of compression and frame rate demanded by the events to be captured.
Focusing on ways to maximise the capability of the new DS2, Dedicated Micros recognised that there was a need to continuously record 'information' quality background images - to provide useful motion and correlation of events - and high resolution images at a good frame rate when something is actually happening in the image. The approach we have taken to achieve this, utilising NetVu Connected Trans-Coding software allows dynamic switching from MPEG4 low resolution continuous background grade recording - a bit like "always on" pre-alarm -- to high resolution evidential quality JPEG images on alarm, while still streaming in either format from the same camera over the network for remote monitoring purposes.
This has obvious advantages in the IP environment by providing the system administrator with complete control over bandwidth utilisation and in both IP and standalone solutions by levering the maximum recording performance from the new DS2, effectively allowing the user to record continuously on all cameras without doubling disk space. With the invention of industry-leading MultiMode Recording it is now possible to reduce the number of compromises a user has to make and further utilise the full performance capacity of a 100pps product. This contrasts with the pre-MultiMode situation where typically we would have expected users in '24hr mode' to achieve an image update every 3 seconds.

A Connected Future
Looking ahead, as NetVu Connected technology continues to be rolled out across Dedicated Micros product base, more and more installers and end users will be able to take advantage of benefits which come with seamless connectivity and control in the IP environment.
