Is Amazon key a sign of a lock-less future?

Assa Abloy and Amazon provide key app for deliveries when you're not home

Assa Abloy Group company, Yale Locks & Hardware has recently teamed up with Amazon on a new service exclusively for Prime members that radically improves the convenience of receiving deliveries.

Amazon Key enables in-home delivery and secure home access for guests and service appointments.

To get started with Amazon Key, Prime members need to first purchase and install the Amazon Key In-Home Kit, which consists of a choice of compatible smart locks, including the Yale Assure Lock Touchscreen (YRD226-AZ) and the Amazon Cloud Cam, an intelligent indoor security camera.

Using the Amazon Key app, members can also grant secure access for in-home Amazon deliveries, receive notifications when deliveries are made, watch the delivery happening live or review a video of the delivery after it is complete.

For the moment, Amazon is providing this service only through its own delivery team. It is already available through 37 cities across the US where Amazon Logistics handles the drop-offs. But the company says it hopes to expand the service more widely in the future.
