Interview with airport security expert: “Terrorism is the biggest threat”

Stockholm, Sweden

In this Detektor TV Magazine video clip, Bjorn Gunderson, Security Process Manager at Schiphol Amsterdam Airport give his view on airport security. “If you have no information and no intelligence about those guys, it is quite easy for them to get into a public area”, he says.

Bjorn Gunderson, who has been in the aviation industry since 1985, says there are 10-15 incidents with left luggage every day at Schiphol Airport. He claims terrorism is the main security concern at airports and attacks like the one in Brussels 2016 are hard to prevent from happening.

He says: “If you have no information and no intelligence about those guys, it is quite easy for them to get into a public area. All we can do is profiling”.

Bjorn Gunderson believes intelligence and intelligent systems and sensors are the biggest technical trends in airport security. He also says drones can be a big problem because they can bring items into the airport, but they are also a safety problem – in the USA there have been quite a lot of incidents at airports and it happens in Europe as well.

Finally, in the future, he thinks there will be a system where the passenger is not aware of what is happening – they will keep on walking and as they are walking through the terminal they are screened.

“The goal is that the passengers will not be obstructed by security, they will just keep on going to the gate without any hassle”, he says.
