Intelligent area surveillance systems

Stockholm, Sweden

Protection of critical infrastructure is a growing area where Saab already has a vast experience. New solutions for intelligent area surveillance increase the situational awareness while lowering costs at the same time.

Saab is continously developing advanced systems for the protection of critical infrastructure and the company offer complete solutions for sophisticated area surveillance, including both camera and radar surveillance.

The solution for radar surveillance of restricted areas, such as prisons, nuclear power plants, harbours, and airports, is both new and unique. As a complement to cameras, radar sensors offers the possibility to know what acutally is going on - 24/7, in all weather conditions.

Cameras and radars work together and, through advanced sensor fusion, data is merged into one common picture, thereby creating immediate situational awareness. More and more intelligence is built in, and today the system can automatically track and follow individuals, even if they move between different cameras. A new function is the automatic tracking system, making it possible to quickly find out where a person or an object came from. The operator no longer needs to analyse different kinds of information from different kinds of sensors to see what he wants to see, as the system automatically presents the whole course of events. Without human intervention, the system warns when someone passes an alarm zone and the anomaly detection system alerts if someone is acting strangely.

"This solution presents a new way of working, and we see this as an excellent example of how new technology both increases security and decreases costs," says Gunilla Fransson, Head of Saab Security. "Today's modern society is more or less reliant on the systems and networks that build up our infrastructure, and an incident or attack on such a system can lead to severe consequences on both a personal and economic level. Intelligent area surveillance is one of the possible ways to protect the critical infrastructure of our society."
