"As the national carrier of Bahrain it is imperative to have an effective security system in place for the network," says Gulf Air acting president and chief executive Björn Näf, adding that Gulf Air has reported a strong increase in passenger traffic through its hub in Bahrain since the launch of revamped network in July.

"We have a very effective security system in place and the new office will further boost our vigilance and the security net already in place at the headquarters," says Mr. Näf.

Gulf Air Head of Security Rinus Moerdijk said that more than 50 Bahrainis are now in place to carry out their duties, include patrolling the cabin crew residential localities in Manama, the headquarters and the Bahrain International Airport.

"We are working closely with Bahraini authorities to ensure a smooth security net for the national carrier and the facilities concerned," says Mr. Moerdijk.

The responsibilities of the Gulf Air security staff include keeping vigilance in the excess baggage and other sensitive areas, checking aircrafts upon departure and arrival in order to comply with international standards and recommendations, he said.

The security department has also been equipping its security team with additional gadgets such as walkie-talkies, as well as installing surveillance cameras to enhance security of its operations at Gulf Air's Muharraq headquarters and outstations.
