L-3 Communications supplies screening solution to Kansai airport

NEW YORK, NY (USA)

L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL) announces that its security and detection systems subsidiary will equip Japan's second largest international airport, Kansai International (KIX), with eight VIS 108 advanced technology (AT) systems and four eXaminer 3DX(r) explosives detection systems (EDS). The systems will be part of an integrated, inline baggage screening system.

The high-speed automated VIS 108, which screens up to 1,800 bags per hour, accepts out-of-gauge objects, reducing the need for manual searches. The VIS 108 is also currently in use at Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND), the busiest airport in the world, as well as at Central Japan International Airport (NGO).

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA)-certified eXaminer 3DX will be used to complement the VIS 108 systems for baggage screening. The eXaminer features the highest inline throughput of any TSA-certified system. L-3 also supplies Tokyo-Narita International Airport (NRT) with eXaminer technology.

"The opportunity to provide Kansai with an inclusive checked baggage screening system positions L-3 as Japan's preferred supplier of advanced technology and TSA-certified explosives detection systems, " says Thomas Ripp, president of L-3 Security and Detection Systems. "In providing the industry's most reliable threat detection systems to the second busiest international airport in the country, this selection underscores Japan's confidence in our ability to keep throughput rates at desirable levels while offering the highest possible degree of threat detection."
