Luton airport selects Smiths to drive security upgrade

Watford, UK

Smiths Detection has won a major contract to upgrade security screening at London Luton Airport (LLA) as part of a £100 million transformation of the airport.

Smiths Detection systems were chosen not only for their performance and reliability but also for their efficiency, which is designed to minimise queues and speed up the screening process for passengers.

Smiths Detection will provide LLA with new passenger screening technology including the Hi-Scan 6040-2is X-ray scanners and the new Checkpoint Evo networked checkpoint system alongside the rapid tray return system supplied by Herbert Systems.

Following a trial installation in France, LLA will become the first airport in Europe to install Checkpoint Evo for regular security operations. This innovative software package greatly enhances checkpoint inspection and integration capacities by linking individual sensors within a fully networked system. Through data collection, distribution and management, it improves both the inspection process and operational efficiency.

The new technology will not only deliver enhanced security capabilities but also increase the operational efficiency of the screening process. This helps speed the flow of passengers through security checks, minimising waiting times and simplifying processes for customer-facing staff.

The system will significantly improve the passenger experience which is a key objective of the airport’s £100 million redevelopment. As part of the transformation, LLA is also completely redesigning the terminal, increasing annual capacity to 18 million passengers by 2026, as well as improving transport links and introducing new shopping and dining options, including a new world-class executive lounge.

Andrew Davis, Head of Market EMEA, Smiths Detection, said: “The combination of the Hi-Scan 6040-2is, Checkpoint Evo and Herbert’s TRS provides an outstanding technological solution to the requirement for smarter checkpoints. The result will be a significant improvement in operational efficiency and we are delighted London Luton Airport has chosen to continue our relationship for the supply of advanced security solutions.”

Neil Thompson, LLA’s Operations Director, said: “We are spending over £100 million to transform LLA by adding new capacity and offering the best possible experience for passengers. Smiths Detection’s technology gives us the combination of reliability and performance we need to make security screening as fast and efficient as possible for the growing number of passengers who choose to fly from London Luton Airport.”

Checkpoint Evo enables centralised remote screening, speeding up the inspection process for hand baggage. The technology allows X-ray image evaluation and alarm resolution to be centrally monitored, away from the distractions of the checkpoint area. In addition, suspicious areas in bags are highlighted electronically, allowing more focused searches for illegal items by operators.

Through improved data management, Checkpoint Evo allows airport operators to share information and monitor the entire screening operation, covering several checkpoints, via remote portable devices such as tablet PCs.

The Hi-Scan 6040-2is is an advanced dual-view X-ray inspection system for automatic explosive detection at checkpoints where bags and personal belongings are screened. Its sophisticated X-ray technology detects explosive materials and generates reliable, high quality images.
