Lima Safe City project sees 40% drop in crime

Lima, Peru

Earlier this year in January, the Lima city government decided to initiate a Safe City video surveillance project and selected Axxon Net as their choice of software, an open platform for smart video surveillance from Axxonsoft.
Lima is the capital and largest city in Peru, forming its economic, political, and cultural centre, and with that comes all the problems of crime and security generally associated with the management of such an important city. The aim of the project was to design it in such away that it will help to reduce the city's crime rate and aid in police investigation.

The Puerto Libre district, Lima's largest, was chosen to begin the project. Strategic points in the district are now covered by 42 IP surveillance cameras for public safety, with many more to be added. Information from all cameras is sent to the central monitoring hub, where the entire system is managed. Completion of the project is slated for June 2013.

According to Rafael Santos, the mayor of Lima, the Safe City project in Pueblo Libre has already caused a 40% drop in crime, with further improvements to come. The most important thing is that all of the city's safety services work together.
