Fastcom solves tailgating dilemma at MERCK

Lausanne, Switzerland

Fastcom Technology's SMAC system has been deployed to secure the access to a cleanroom building of the renowned pharmaceutical company, MERCK in Darmstadt, Germany. The SMACS solution answers all the security and organisational requirements whilst still allowing for a high throughput anti-tailgating control.

The initial challenge for the project was the integration into the architectural infrastructure of the access to be secured. Moreover, a material transit (via europalette) had to remain available . Turnstiles or mechanical man-traps cannot be implemented as they would prevent the material transit and/or the escape route. Finally, it was very important to have a high throughput of people through the access to be controlled while ensuring very securely that no tailgating is taking place.

MERCK selected the SMACS system as the solution to solve the challenges of this project. With the SMACS solutions, different types of flows can be secured simultaneously through a single infrastructure. Such types of flows include people, handicapped people, hand-luggage and material. Moreover, SMACS permits a wide range of operational modes and functionalities such as anti-tailgating, empty check, asymmetrical control, material control and transport mode.

The SMACS solution integrates seamlessly into the existing infrastructure such as the expensive doors. The operational processes are adapted to the specific requirements of MERCK.

Thanks to SMACS, the anti-tailgating process is performed totally automatically and does not require any human intervention, relieving the security operator from tedious work.

"MERCK had been looking for an anti-tailgating solution that fulfilled their requirements for a long time. The SMACS solution was selected for its capacity to deliver the required security without major construction work while allowing the needed operational flexibility." Eugen Zähler, Fastcom Technology SA.
