Eyevis helps utilities monitor critical infrastructure

Reutlingen, Germany

The wall displays the respective distribution systems as well as CCTV images of the critical infrastructure.

A 3 × 2 video wall composed of 46" LCD displays by Eyevis now gives an overview of Stadtwerke Kaiserslautern’s four distribution networks for gas, electricity, water and district heating in the new network control centre of the public utilities company.

The video wall is part of WEY Technology‘s aggregated order, which comprises the merging of the two thus far separated control centres for the gas segment on the one hand and the energy, water and district heating segment on the other hand, as well as the integration of a spatially separated emergency control centre.

For visual display purposes, they also installed an Eyevis video wall comprised of six 46 inches bezel-free Eye-LCD-4600-M-USN-LD displays, supplemented with a network-based Netpix 4900 graphic controller and Eyecon V5 video management software for the operation of the large-screen video wall. The installation is fully integrated into the WEY distribution platform via a fibre optic connection. All of the altogether 29 sources and systems can therefore be controlled via the multi-functional WEY keyboard and be displayed on the video wall with just one push of a key.

The video wall was designed for 24/7-operation and can switch easily between sectors via pre-defined Presets. The wall displays the respective distribution systems as well as CCTV images of the critical infrastructure such as the ball-shaped gas tanks and natural gas refuelling stations.

“The video wall displays in use are ideally suited for this control centre application,” explains Ralf Marx, as the person at Eyevis responsible for sales in the energy sector in the DACH region and therefore also for this project. “Thanks to the small bezels, there is only a nominal distance of just 5.7mm between the screens of two adjacent display modules. In addition, each single module excels with a resolution of 1,920 × 1,080 pixels, whereby the simultaneous display of several sources still impresses with its high image quality.” The robust product design of the displays with intelligent cooling fans enables the 24/7 non-stop operation of the displays. The temperature factor, in large parts responsible for burn-in effects, can thus be perfectly controlled and minimised.

Stadtwerke Kaiserslautern benefits of a fully integrated cross-sector network control centre with state-of-the-art technology. The merging of the two control centres now offers the city Kaiserslautern the highest possible degree of security of supply. The new control centre now monitors and controls all facilities centrally in a coordinated fashion. It enables the better harmonisation of interventions and guarantees a quick reaction to any incident. Apart from the main control centre, the project also comprised another spatially separated, but technically integrated emergency control centre, based on the WEY distribution platform, as well as the equipment of an emergency room.

For eyevis and WEY Technologies, this project was another example of their close cooperation. The client is very satisfied with the new facilities. “On the employee side, the acceptance of the systems is also very positive,” explains the assistant head of the department and person responsible for the project at Stadtwerke Kaiserslautern.
