Dahua ITS facilitates city traffic

Hangzhou, China

In order to better manage the growing volume of city traffic and to solve congestion problems, the local authorities for three major adjacent Polish cities decided to use an intelligent traffic system (ITS) to better improve traffic flow and to enable people to have a better quality of movement for their social and working lives.

The cities of Gdansk, Gdynia and Sopot cover an area of around 414.81 square kilometres and accommodate nearly 1 million commuters each day.

The project began in 2010 using Dahua’s customised system, and was designed to satisfy the end-user requirements as it met the price and performance criteria plus it included an ITS system to integrate automatic number plate recognition (ANPRs), red light enforcement, speed systems, and various green waves designed to regulate driving behaviour and avoid traffic jams.

For the ANPR systems, Dahua 1.4-megapixel and 11-megapixel HD traffic cameras are deployed at intersections on main roads, providing front and back of vehicle camera angles respectively. Additionally, both loops and video detection are used to improve accuracy. As for speeding violations, legally approved speed systems are installed and are able to issue fines to control urban driving speed and improve road safety.

To further improve traffic efficiency, green waves are utilised on traffic light intersection, allowing continuous traffic to flow smoothly over several intersections in one main direction, which not only reduces the length and frequency of congestion, but also cuts co2 emissions and improves fuel efficiency of the vehicles, whilst at the same time, buying more time for pedestrians at crossings.

"We had already assured different customers in Poland and neighbouring countries to work on an ITS projects based on Dahua cameras and detectors,” said Piotr Wisniewski from Radar system, a local distributor in Poland. "With Dahua's good quality and service, all the projects we have done have already proven stability and greatly facilitate cities’ traffic, leading people to a better life.”

"It is a great example that a European city uses a Chinese ITS deployment, we appreciate our partner’s trust and the effort they have made,” said Bill Zhou, Senior ITS Engineer at Dahua Technology. "Traffic problems are a common issue for many expanding cities, and our ITS is not only helping the city reinforce its traffic management but is also providing the people with a better, smarter and more efficient city.”
