Security systems and the essential role of a quality back-up battery

A reliable backup battery is an essential component of any intruder alarm or security system, as it ensures it remains operational even if the power goes out. One of the world-leading battery manufacturers, GS Yuasa, strongly emphasises that backup battery failure means that a security system is unable to function when the main power source is lost, leaving the premises vulnerable and unprotected.

The role of the backup battery is to provide power to the system's control panel, sensors, and other components when the main power is unavailable either through a power outage or if cut. This allows the system to continue monitoring for intrusions and sound an alarm if anyone is detected. The backup battery also keeps the system's memory and settings intact, so that it can resume normal operation once power is restored.

When choosing a backup battery for a security system, it is important to select a high quality, original equipment quality battery such as GS Yuasa’s Yuasa or Yu-Lite brands. While it may be tempting to save money by purchasing a cheaper, generic battery, the risks, according to the company, far outweigh the potential savings.

Mike Taylor, Product Manager at GS Yuasa Battery Manufacturing UK Ltd. said: "The importance of choosing a high-quality, original equipment battery for a security system cannot be overstated.

Yuasa’s NP range of industrial VRLA batteries have been the European market leader for over 40 years. They are the original NP type battery and are designed to meet the specific requirements of security systems and provide reliable performance over their long life."

According to Mike, low quality batteries may not have the same capacity or lifespan which means they need to be replaced before a full service interval, this leads to additional costs over time, as well as the inconvenience of frequent replacement. In addition, they may not perform as well at the critical moment or provide enough power to keep the system running during an extended power outage, leaving it inoperable and putting the security of a premises at risk.

In addition to Yuasa VRLA batteries, GS Yuasa’s Yu-Lite range of NiCd, NiMH and lithium cells are designed for use in emergency lighting, wireless security, fire and other industrial applications. Primary and secondary cell types as well as single and multiple pack configuration options are available as is a range of alarm system batteries specifically designed for use in a wide range of leading wireless security systems security systems.
