What is an IP camera?
An IP camera is short for Internet Protocol camera and is also known as a network camera. It is a digital surveillance camera that transmits video and audio over a network, either via a network cable or wirelessly. Unlike analogue CCTV cameras, an IP camera does not need to be directly connected to a recording device. Instead, it communicates independently over the network and can be accessed from a computer, tablet or mobile phone from anywhere in the world.
The first IP-based surveillance camera was launched in 1996 and has since largely replaced the traditional analogue camera in newer installations.
How does an IP camera work?
Inside the camera are an image sensor, a lens and a small web server that handles network communication. The camera digitises the image directly and then sends the video stream over the network to a recording device or cloud storage. Each camera has its own IP address, allowing it to communicate directly with other devices on the network.
Wired IP cameras are connected via a network cable, typically Cat5e or Cat6. With a PoE (Power over Ethernet) switch, a single cable is sufficient to provide the camera with both power and data, making installation considerably simpler. Wireless IP cameras connect via Wi-Fi, but wired solutions are generally more reliable, as wireless networks are more susceptible to interference.
IP camera systems and recording
In an IP camera system, all cameras are connected to an NVR (network video recorder), which stores and manages recorded footage. The NVR also serves as a central interface for viewing all cameras simultaneously and searching archived footage. Many NVRs have a dedicated app that provides direct access via a mobile phone.
Many IP cameras have an SD card slot for local storage directly in the camera. This can serve as a backup solution if the recording device is damaged or stolen. Cloud storage is another option, providing access to recorded footage regardless of what happens to the local equipment.
What is the difference between an IP camera and an analogue camera?
Analogue cameras send their video signal via coaxial cable to a DVR, which converts the signal into digital format. IP cameras digitise the image inside the camera and transmit it directly over the network, providing higher image quality and greater installation flexibility. Analogue signals cannot be encrypted, whereas IP cameras can use encrypted data traffic, reducing the risk of unauthorised access.
Scalability is another difference. In an analogue system, the number of cameras is limited by the number of ports on the DVR and the maximum distance over which coaxial cables can be run. In an IP camera system, the only requirement is for the camera to have access to the network, making it easy to expand the system over time.
Features of modern IP cameras
- Motion detection activates recording or sends notifications when the camera detects movement in the image.
- Infrared night vision allows the camera to record in complete darkness without being visible from outside.
- AI-based analytics can distinguish between people, vehicles and animals directly in the camera, without sending data to external servers.
- Two-way communication is available on many models, allowing users to both listen and speak through the camera remotely.
- PTZ control (pan, tilt and zoom) allows users to remotely control the camera's movement and zoom in real time.
Where is IP camera surveillance used?
IP cameras are used across a wide range of sectors and environments. Shops, offices, warehouses and industrial premises are common locations, but they are also installed in residential buildings, car parks and public spaces. Home users are increasingly installing IP cameras to monitor entrances, garages and gardens. The cameras can be integrated with alarm systems so that an alarm is triggered automatically when movement or an intrusion is detected.
In the UK, the use of CCTV and other camera surveillance is subject to data protection and privacy legislation, including the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. Organisations using surveillance cameras must have a clear and lawful purpose for their use and, in many circumstances, provide clear signage informing people that they are being recorded.
