Dublin City University equipped with access control from Salto

Dublin, Ireland

A new access control system based on products from Salto Systems and installed by Doorware Ltd is playing a key role in securing sports facilities at Dublin City University.

Situated on an 85 acre campus three miles north of the city centre and just a 15-minute drive from Dublin airport, Dublin City University (DCU) is a young university. It offers over 80 programmes, divided between undergraduate and postgraduate courses and has almost 10,000 registered students made up of full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as students on the Distance Education degree programme.

The sports facilities provided on campus are outstanding and DCU Sport cater for DCU Students, Staff, Alumni as well as the local community and facilities consist of the University Sports Complex, DCU Sports Grounds and a 5-a-side Soccer Centre.

Amenities include a state of the art fitness gym with over 100 pieces of equipment, a 25 metre deck level pool with ancillary spa facilities on deck side, a 3 basketball court sports hall, minor hall, 2 squash courts, a 4 lane 75m covered sprint track, a new fully equipped wellness studio and several other studios for an array of programme activities and a sports ground containing six pitches.

Kieran Gorey of Doorware Ltd comments "DCU Sport wanted a highly secure and flexible access control system to provide advanced security management of its fitness facilities. To control access to the gym we have fitted Salto Mifare controlled wall readers to the car park barriers and main entrance door. These are complemented by 312 Mifare controlled i-Locker smart electronic locker locks that have been retro-fitted to the existing lockers. Members access the gym facility and the lockers via their 'Lance Armstrong' type smart wrist bands."

Aznar Sethna, Salto Systems area sales manager Northern Europe, said "The Salto i-Locker electronic locker lock is designed to provide a high level of security protection for lockers. It features a large twist operated locking handle for ease of use, even with wet hands, and its durable wipe clean construction is resistant to most chemicals to ensure a long lasting, smart appearance.
The access reader is built into the outside of the handle while the locking mechanism, electronic components and battery pack are all located on the inside of the locker door, safe from potential manipulation or vandalism. A useful feature is that staff can use their general ID for several applications in addition to opening the locker, and these can include general access control and cashless payment functions if required. With management audit trailing and timed access built into the lock, the i-Locker lock provides an intelligent solution for high performance locker security in a versatile easy to fit package."

Ken Robinson, chief executive DCU Sport, said "We're pleased with the finished installation and with the performance of our new Salto i-Locker access control system. It delivers everything we've asked of it and ensures only members can access our facilities whilst securing their personal possessions while they enjoy their sport."
