ONVIF was founded in 2008 with the target of developing a standard for the interface of IP-based physical security products. Per Björkdahl has been Chairman of the ONVIF steering committee since September 2012

“A majority of all the cameras that are sold today are ONVIF conformant”, he says.

ONVIF is now working on adopting the H265 in a (video) profile but over the last years there has been a great deal of focus on standards for access control. Per Björkdahl admits it is harder to encourage access control manufacturers to adopt open standards compared to video surveillance manufacturers.

“It is slightly different – the channel looks a bit different. I think also that the industry is more used to a propriety scenario, but we can see signs that the end users, installers and integrators are starting to embrace the new methods and a majority of the major access control companies are members of ONVIF and prepared for this shift”, he says.

Per Björkdahl believes access control will be as open as video surveillance:

“Definitely, that is in the vision of ONVIF, we believe that all security systems will share one interface.”
