Thermal imaging cameras aid Argentinian fire engines

Barneveld, The Netherlands

The fire trucks of firefighters across Argentina are now equipped with special thermal imaging cameras from Orlaco.
The cameras enable the firefighters to see through smoke while driving straight to the fire. Argentinian President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner officially presented the fire trucks to the national fire department, with this unique news.

A big step has been made into improving the fight against forest fires, now that the forest fire trucks are equipped with unique Orlaco thermal imaging cameras. The innovative fire trucks are especially designed for off-road driving, however smoke and the unusual terrain make it difficult for fire trucks to get to the fire quickly. With an Orlaco thermal imaging camera mounted on a rotating and elevating unit on the truck, the driver in the cab can view on a large screen exactly where he is and avoid any obstacles. The robust thermal image cameras from Orlaco are waterproof and shock-resistant, and can easily be mounted on the bumper of the vehicle.

This special project began in 2010, during the Interschutz 2010 show in Leipzig. The Argentinian fire department was introduced to this vision solution during a demonstration by the Dutch camera manufacturer and developer, Orlaco. Jacinto Ltda in Portugal built the first 32 vehicles. CMS Sudamericana SRL transported the vehicles to Argentina. Tijmen van Ginkel of Orlaco went on site to Buenos Aires and trained the operators and technicians how to use the TICs. After the exceptional presentation of the forest fire vehicles by the proud Argentinian President, the Argentinian fire trucks were ready for use.
