In addition to delivering exceptional image quality, the FCB-EX1010 includes enhanced privacy masking and motion detection features. It is based on a ¼-type progressive scan EXview HAD CCD, delivering a resolution of up to 440,000 pixels. The module is particularly aimed at CCTV manufacturers building speed domes, traffic monitoring and automated number plate recognition (ANPR) systems, although it is also suitable for use in low-vision environments, photo-booths, biometrics, optical systems and broadcasting.

The camera's ability to capture images in low-light conditions down to 0.1 lux is further enhanced by a slow auto-exposure response, which allows the monitoring of areas where lighting is prone to abrupt changes: for instance in a car park at night. Sony's Wide-D technology further improves performance by exploiting a combination of progressive scanning and image processing. The same image is captured twice: once at normal shutter speed, and again at a high shutter speed. A DSP integrated within the camera then combines the two images to reproduce the high contrast of the original view.

To ensure conformance to national and international privacy requirements and allow the camera's use in wide-area monitoring applications, the FCB-EX1010 includes an enhanced version of Sony's established spherical privacy zone masking technology. The new module adds a mosaic-style masking option, in addition to the existing half-tone and coloured block masks. Masking can be automatically interlocked with the camera's tilt, pan and zoom operations, regardless of camera angle: the FCB-EX1010 automatically adjusts the size of the masked area as the zoom is operated, and can keep masked areas covered even when the camera is circling.

The module's 36x optical zoom lens is augmented by a 12x digital zoom, allowing users to home in on small or distant objects with exceptional clarity. The FCB-EX1010 includes improved built-in motion detection features to help OEMs design automated security and safety systems. The camera also offers a wide maximum field of view of 57.8°.

Further features include an electronic flip (E-Flip) function which can electronically invert an image so that it is displayed correctly. This feature is vital in dome systems, to eliminate the need to provide mechanical flip capabilities when an object moves directly beneath the camera.

A high-speed (38.4kbit/s) serial data interface and TTL signal-level control using the VISCA protocol allows easy systems integration. The device also offers 16bytes of free internal EEPROM space, allowing the storage of data such as product serial numbers and camera/system ID numbers. As with existing Sony FCB-type cameras, it provides electronic shutter/slow shutter features and a choice of internal or external sync.
