Legic Smart Cards Serves Airport in Croatia

Wetzikon (Switzerland)

The Split Kastela Airport is a regional airport on the Adriatic coast where most of the traffic is charter flights bringing in summer holiday makers from large airports around Europe. The airport is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2006. The impact of this rather small one-runway airport is nevertheless impressive in the region - the number of passengers has been steadily increasing, amounting to nearly 800,000 in 2004 and almost 1 million in 2005. The 382 employees work around the clock to provide the best service to their customers. In the first half of 2005 the Split Kastela Airport implemented a new time and attendance system. Both hardware and software were changed. Previously, the old DOS-based software system was used and the hardware was incorporating barcode-based readers. In the past employees had to carry a number of ID cards for various purposes. To minimize the number of ID cards all this various data was written to a LEGIC smart card. The contactless LEGIC smart card now also serves as an official badge (with a picture of an employee) and each employee has to carry it in a visible place. There are 600 cards in circulation.
The new system is based on contactless LEGIC readers and smart cards. There are two LEGIC readers installed inside a building at the entry for the employees and one in the canteen. The data from registrations flow to the Time & Space software
by Spica International. As the name Time&Space implies, the software incorporates time & attendance as well as access control modules, video surveillance and visits management.
Currently, there are two applications running on LEGIC. The first one is for registering time and attendance of employees and the second one is used as means of payment for the lunch at the airport's canteen. Soon, another application - access control in Time & Space - will be implemented with LEGIC. The airport
is modernizing at a fast pace - there will also be a wireless network for checkin of passengers and luggage that will effectively eliminate putting luggage on the wrong plane or passengers leaving without it.
Ever since the launch of the new system there were no hardware or software faults detected. Since the introduction LEGIC smart cards perform flawlessly regardless of the conditions. Also, from the project management's point of view, Spica International met all the deadlines during the implementation period.
