Lantech switches deployed in Finnish tram project

Helsinki, Finland

As the main means of transport in the city centre, Helsinki tram system delivers up to 54.9 million passengers per year (2009).  Being one of the oldest electrified tram networks in the world, the company constantly upgrades its system with the latest IP technology.  Based on the strict specifications, Lantech, a leading brand in hardened and in/outdoor networking products, was chosen for its IPES-5416T-8-67 EN50155 industrial switch to upgrade the Helsinki tram system, and a total of 105 units were deployed in the project involving extreme weather and temperature conditions from -35°C to over 35°C.

The weather in Helsinki experiences extreme differences between seasons, which may be over 30°C in the Summer and lower than -35°C in Winter.  Thus, a most rugged design was one of the key factors to this project.  According to the project manager, the system requirements for this project were that it needed to be PoE at/af supported, EN50155 certified, and with waterproof and dustproof housings or protection, it also needed to be able to sustain long term shock or vibration, extreme temperatures from -35°C to over 35°C, and low voltage power inputs.

The project called for the deployment of 105 Lantech IPES-5416T-8-67 EN50155 industrial switches and each tram was installed with 2 or 3 switches.  These switches connect PIS process computers, LCD displays, apassenger info system, the ticket system, the video surveillance system and the fire alarm system, etc.  All the data for ticketing, video and system is transmitted via the IP networks connected through the LantechIPES-5416T-8-67.
