2010 FIFA World Cup VIP secured by GeoVision

Taiwan, Taiwan

Throughout South Africa, wherever major events take place, SAPS (South Africa Police Services) deploys Mobile Command & Control Centers and ground patrols to protect the safety of VIP and prevent disturbances by the crowd in attendance. The upcoming event FIFA World Cup is no exception.

In 2005, SAPS purchased 2 trailer trucks and turned them into Mobile Command & Control Centers (MCCC) to assist SAPS with VIP protection and crowd control in diverse environments. At the time, MCCC were equipped with outdated technology and static analog cameras. Limited by the cable lengths of analog cameras, MCCC could only secure small areas near the venue and relied on sizeable deployment of ground troops to patrol the perimeters. In order to optimize the usage of MCCC and streamline the police ground patrol, SAPS started to find suitable solution.

Through the local GeoVision distributor, the surveillance systems on the MCCC is redesigned by upgrading to IP solution with Wi-Fi network, thus, eliminating the cabling restrictions. Each MCCC is now equipped with a GV-1480 DVR system (for real-time display and recording of existing analog cameras), a GV-NVR system (manages up to 32 IP channels), eight GV-Video Server (converts analog cameras to IP video streams), eight GV-Day/Night IP Cameras, a GV-Center V2 server, and a GV-Control Center server. After implementation, the Wi-Fi network can cover areas up to 5km radius. GV-Control Center servers are used so each MCCC can view cameras deployed by the other MCCC. MCCC also utilizes 3G network for remote monitoring over the Internet.

Equipped with updated technology, SAPS can now swiftly deploy more cameras with higher flexibility and mobility, especially when VIP moves from one public appearance to the next. By simply using reliable and proactive GeoVision surveillance products, less ground patrols were needed for SAPS to have full coverage of the events.

Since revamping the MCCC in 2008, they have served valiantly in 2008 ANC election, 2009 presidential inauguration, annual opening of the Parliament, and general elections. In June of 2010, SAPS will also deploy the MCCC while FIFA World Cup takes place in South Africa.
