Security upgrade reduces false alarms by 99%

Heywood, Greater Manchester (UK)

A recent security upgrade from video analytics to GJD’s PIR detectors by Lucas CCTV, has proved to significantly reduce the end-customers unwanted alarms to negligible levels.

Nuisance/unwanted alarms are the bane of the security industry. They are generated when the site security is functioning correctly, but a non-threat is continuously triggering the system. For example, this may include car headlights, flickering lights, shadows, insect life such as spiders, or poorly illuminated areas. All of this is made worse by foliage movement, wind, and other severe weather conditions.

GJD’s perimeter protection solutions aim to provide customers with accurate threat detection, while at the same time keeping unwanted alarms to a near zero rate.

Nuisance alarms every night

The customer was frustrated with their existing video analytic based CCTV system due to the high number of unwanted alarms, amounting to more than 80 nuisance alarm notifications every single night. This, according to GJD, was due to the camera’s built-in analytics, as it was constantly being triggered by spiders and poor-quality lighting, the camera was then reporting this as movement alarm scenarios.

Lucas CCTV took over this project, and adhered to two key objectives:

  • Reduce unwanted/nuisance alarms.
  • Retain a high number of genuine alarm activations.

PIR integrated with CCTV solution

Lucas CCTV installed GJD’s external Elite PIR detectors. The Elite is a PIR motion detector that provides a wide-angle detection area from 10m to 35m. The Elite has 2 x volt free contacts on board, which enables it to smoothly integrate with CCTV and intruder systems, as well as GJD lighting systems, making it not only reliable but also fantastic value for money.

For this particular project, the Elite detector integrated with the customer’s existing CCTV camera. It captured genuine intruder motion and then instantly triggered the CCTV camera presets.

With the addition of GJD’s Elite PIR detector, the customer who was previously getting more than 80 unwanted alarm notifications every single night, is now receiving just one activation overnight. This was the milkman at around 3am, which the customer was more than happy with.

GJD detectors have strong CCTV and intruder equipment integration capabilities. End-customers can receive real-time notifications of intruders on their smartphone, which allows them to see exactly what is happening and gives them the ability to take relevant action.

"GJD’s detectors are great well-made external detection products. We always quote external detection at the start of each project and strategically place them to integrate with CCTV for maximised security coverage". commented Lee Thompson, Technical Director at Lucas CCTV Northern Ireland.

Security starts at the perimeter

GJD’s external PIR detectors provide an effective first line of defence, and help enhance the quality that professional security installers deliver to their customers. These external PIR detectors alert clients when an intruder is right at the boundary, rather than when it is too late, and an intruder has already broken into the property. In terms of performance, they are designed to detect motion and heat, and use advanced signal processing and sophisticated algorithms, making them effective when reducing unwanted triggers.
