International Security Expo zooms in on urban security

London, UK

International Security Expo, formerly known as UK Security Expo is taking place at Olympia London from the 28th-29th November, and is debuting the Protecting Urban Spaces Demonstrator (PUSD)- a unique, purpose-built feature, designed exclusively for International Security Expo.

Visitors will see how technologies work through integrated demonstrations and scenarios carried out by Crisis Cast, a team of actors who will simulate various scenarios as they guide visitors through the immersive experience whilst providing explanations of the design features and subsequent challenges involved in protecting an urban space.

Visitors will be able to see how we might protect an urban area from a marauding gun-man attack or a suicide bomber.  They will also be able to see a scenario of how to prevent a vehicle from being used as a weapon, or how to identify a terrorist conducting a reconnaissance prior to an attack.

Through the demonstrator it intended that attendees will be able to see effective protective security in an environment that is appealing and attractive to live and work in.

The event will cover how security infrastructures such as fences, bollards and a wide variety of other street furniture can be constructed to achieve a balanced attractive environment, where the public are confident that their surroundings provide the best possible protection from terrorism or attack.

Infrastructure protection will also be incorporated demonstrating "intelligent" covers that provide access to critical services (water supplies, telephone and power cables, etc.) can raise an alarm when illegitimate access is attempted.

The PUSD space will also illustrate the concept of identification and access control.  Accurate and rapid identification of individuals is a key plank of any protective security regime. This can be used to control access to areas for trusted individuals or trigger a response to a suspicious individual being identified.

The ability to screen individuals for concealed threat items will enable a marauding gun-man, suicide bomber or other deadly attacks to be thwarted. The need to provide balance between ease of access for legitimate visitors against the desired level of security assurances requires a combination of technology, people and process. The PUSD will consider resource implications and explore some of the trade-offs that need to be made in the of screening large numbers of people over long time periods.

Vehicle control and the urban command and control room will also be covered within the PUSD area.
