Tata launches surface mounted bollard system for temporary use

Crowthorne, Berkshire

Tata Steel (formerly Corus) has introduced a rapid install surface mounted PAS 68 rated bollard system that can be deployed at the rate of one bollard every 15 minutes.
The new system has beendeveloped to meet the requirements of organisations who need to provide high levels of protection
against the threat from a vehicle borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) but do not wish to install fixed, permanent bollards with the expense and disruption that excavating their foundations can entail. Speed of deployment of the new surface mounted system is a major benefit, making it ideal for use at temporary events.

Heavy-duty PAS 68 fixed bollards, with traditional reinforced concrete foundations, are typically used to protect high profile sites, such as key Government or commercial locations, from hostile vehicle attack. They are also now being specified to protect crowded places such as shopping centres, sports arenas and exhibition/conference centres, locations where they offer proven effectiveness in stopping hostile vehicles yet permit free and uninterrupted movement of pedestrians through a security line.

However a need has been identified for high performance PAS 68 rated bollards that can be surface mounted and thus can be quickly installed and easily reconfigured to meet changing security needs.

Demand for this type of bollard is coming from those involved in running temporary, yet often large, events on an occasional basis. These include major sports fixtures, musical concerts, and other large public events. Interest has also been expressed in systems of this type for use on high profile Governmental occasions, such as state visits and inter-Government summits. The drivers for such a
surface mounted system include eliminating the need for foundations to be excavated, thus avoiding the costs and disruption that this entails, the quest for speed of deployment, and the ability to rapidly reconfigure the arrangement if security needs change.

The Tata Steel Surface Mounted Bollard System was designed specifically to meet these market requirements and is a new development based on the Company’s recently announced Ultra Shallow Foundation Bollard System which has a structural depth of only 75 mm (3”). The new surface mounted system comprises a heavy-duty base plate onto which is mounted a high performance steel bollard. When the bollards are deployed the base plates are joined together to provide the system with the required integrity to ensure that the bollard line delivers its tested performance. The new Surface Mounted Bollard System has been PAS 68 tested which involved stopping a 7500 kg truck impacting at 90 degrees at a speed of 48 kph (30 mph).

Deployment of the new system is fast – 15 minutes per bollard is possible depending on site conditions. When installation is taking place bevelled threshold ramps can be easily incorporated along the sides of the base plate to provide a gentle camber, thus facilitating wheelchair access.

When the event is over the bollards can be easily removed and stored ready for use again on a similar occasion. However if the security situation changes and there is a need for fixed bollards in a new scheme these surface mounted units can be re-used and easily installed as permanent bollards requiring only a shallow 75mm (3”) depth foundation.

Several bollard profiles and styles are available to suit differing client aesthetic requirements. The system can be purchased separately for a stand-alone installation or can be specified as part of a larger scheme involving several elements of a complete site security plan.
