Tony smith former UK Border Force Director General and now international liaison director at Borderpol said "It is clear there are inadequate structures and systems in place to properly combat international organised crime rings and terrorists who show no respect for national and international borders."
"Border control agencies require better intelligence and shared watch list systems particularly in the EU. Border control is an essential part of a country's national infrastructure and needs to adapt quickly to new and emerging threats such as the Islamic state. We urge control authorities worldwide to rise to this challenge."
The expert meeting, organised by Borderpol and hosted by Mr Leo Nissinen, Director General of the Finnish Customs continues today. The objectives of this workshop is to examine current trends in the modus operandi of international criminals; examine how Schengen delivers enhanced cross border cooperation and highlight weaknesses or areas where greater collaboration is required; to consider how information and intelligence can be shared across different types of border (eg Schengen, EU and External Borders) to interdict international criminals; and to examine the technology and systems available to government agencies to counter the threat of international organised crime. A round up of its findings will be available shortly.
The next Borderpol event will be the annual World Borderpol Congress held in Budapest in December 2014.
