£27M Stonehenge renovations deploy GJD technology

Salisbury, Wiltshire

GJD Manufacturing is protecting “one of the Wonders of the World”, the prehistoric Stonehenge site, one of Britain’s most popular tourist attractions, recently underwent a massive £27 million renovation project, for part of which, GJD worked closely with Wessex Fire and Security to manufacture and install the new security system for the prestige and prehistoric site.

This is the largest capital project even undertaken by English Heritage. Owing to the high scale of the scheme, Stonehenge required a high-end, sophisticated perimeter detection and security system.

The GJD infrared Clarius illuminators proved ideal for the customer’s specific requirements, as they work in conjunction with black and white or day and night cameras, providing a light invisible to the human eye, but fully visible to the CCTV camera.

Wessex Fire and Security secured the project to supply, install and commission the fire and security systems for the new Stonehenge visitor centre. Three buildings make up the new Stonehenge facility: the main visitors centre, an ancillary building (for all plant, vehicles and machinery) and a hub/security post (the former visitors centre).

The use of the infrared Clarius IM units arose to meet a specific client requirement. Through the course of the equipment verification process the client elected to use video analytics and as a consequence they needed to separate cameras from IR sources to minimise insect attraction to the cameras. Wessex Fire and Security looked at a number of product alternatives, but selected GJD due to their previous experience and according to the company they are pleased with the equipment performance.
