Web TV: Major players on AI and video analytics

Stockholm, Sweden

In this Detektor TV video clip, industry experts from Hikvision, Axis, Dahua, Mobotix, UTC, Hanwha Techwin, Genetec, Vivotek, Vanderbilt, Idis and Eagle Eye Networks share their views on AI and video analytics.

Security professionals have somewhat different ideas on how much AI technology has actually been developed. Uri Guterman, Head of Product & Marketing at Hanwha Techwin Europe says: “We see now more and more AI and deep learning platforms designed for the edge rather than the server.”

“Still in its early days”

However, most of the industry professionals that Detektor TV has spoken to are skeptical about the AI and machine learning hype. Håkan Johansson, Sales Director for Northern Europe at Axis Communications says: “AI is still in its early days, and I think it is the same thing for machine learning. There is a lot of data that you can capture – but the output of the product, the analytics and the tools will not be better than what you have collected. You need to have the system in place for a long time to really get the machine to understand everything.”

Increased demand for video analytics

Mobotix CEO Thomas Lausten stresses that video analytics is moving from a trend to become real business. He says: “We can see that analytics and deep learning are taking off, not only for large applications and industry projects, but also for smaller applications in the mid-market like retailers and smaller offices.”

Retail is one segment where the demand for analytics has increased. Gary Harmer, Sales Director for Hikvision in the UK, says: “In the last year we have seen an increasing demand for retailers in particular and from business in general, looking for management information and business intelligence through the use of video analytics on things such as people counting, queue management, the length of a queue so they can deploy resources and provide a better customer experience.”
