MACE aims to replace almost everything in your pocket

Groenlo, The Netherlands

Hans Rappard, software developer at Nedap works on the MACE access platform

MACE is one of the latest innovative offerings from Nedap Identification Systems and is a mobile access control platform. Hans Rappard, software developer at Nedap is currently working on MACE, and explains about the development of this brand new platform.

"I work on reducing the huge pile of plastic in people's wallets. We wanted to replace plastic access cards with a digital version. Preferably on smartphones, because people always have it with them. And so the idea for MACE was born: people identification with the use of smartphones,” says Hans, who has been working at Nedap as a software developer of embedded systems for 19 years.

Three techniques were used in the development of the new platform. "Developing MACE took a great deal of effort because the platform consists of a reader, an app and a cloud based server. We use three techniques: Bluetooth, NFC and QR codes. These techniques send the ID number wirelessly from the MACE app to the reader.”

“During Ifsec in London in June we officially introduced MACE to the market. The weeks prior to this event were quite busy! To me the development of a new product does not have be easy or 'succeed' right away. I think working on a difficult product is actually fun and challenging. Obviously we are very proud now that the platform is ready. The demand for such a solution is huge and now Nedap is the first to meet this demand. Those weeks of hard work were definitely worth it!”
