The future of access is already unlocked

Oulou, Finland

In 2016 Iloq introduced the world’s first battery-free mobile access sharing solution, which has literally "unlocked" a whole new level of access possibilities.

Apps have changed the way we live our lives, and our smartphones are full of them. We use them, for example, to get the latest news, order our food, keep in touch with our friends and even to monitor our sleep. And they’re all easily accessible from a few clicks or swipes on our mobile phones.

Since 2003, Iloq has been innovating solutions that are making our lives more accessible. In the company's digital locking solution, one key can be programmed with the access rights for all the locks needing to be opened. In an apartment block, users can access, for example, the front door, the door to their apartment, the sauna, the gym, the bike warehouse, the laundry room and even the garbage area using one and the same key, providing fast and convenient access around the building.

In 2016, Iloq took its promise of making life accessible to the next level when they introduced the world’s first battery-free mobile access sharing solution. This move has literally "unlocked" a whole new level of access possibilities.

It was not so long ago when mobile phones were, well, phones: purely used to make and receive calls. According to Statista, the number of smartphone users worldwide today surpasses three billion and is forecast to further grow by several hundred million in the next few years. These powerful tools ensure that we are more in touch than ever before. In touch with our friends, families and colleagues and, more importantly, with the world at large.

Studies from Buildfire state that 10% of people check their phones as much as once every four minutes. And, not surprisingly, 88% of mobile time is spent on apps.

"Iloq’s mobile access sharing solution solution was initially designed for the utilities industry where there are traditionally many sites spread out over a vast area with hundreds of locks, numerous members of staff and a huge number of keys in circulation," explains Joni Lampinen, Chief Marketing Officer at Iloq. "As an entirely key-free solution, access rights to open doors, locks, and padlocks etc. are sent remotely to the Iloq app running on a smartphone. This state-of-the-art solution eliminates security risks related to lost or stolen physical keys, the need for staff to carry around big bunches of keys or waste time and money travelling between administration offices and sites to collect and return keys."

Critical infrastructure and utilities, such as the telecommunications sector, have quickly understood the benefits of maximized security – only the right people have access to the right sites at the right times – combined with minimized lifecycle costs – no massive expenses to deal with lost or stolen keys, no batteries to buy or spend money on maintenance changing them. Just smooth, efficient and reliable access in all weathers with no fear of downtime.

"But, today," continues Joni Lampinen, "it is not just critical infrastructure and utilities that are picking up on the benefits of mobile access management. As ownership of smartphones and usage of apps becomes ‘the norm’, more and more commercial and residential sectors are exploring this practical and user-friendly solution. And, at the same time, Iloq is adding to its product portfolio and developing even more apps to make life accessible not only in the workplace, but also in our homes. Watch this space for some exciting news in the near future."
