Cayman Islands airport installs non-invasive body scanners

Leeuwarden, The Netherlands

In the Cayman Islands, Customs & Border Control Service (CBC) has installed state-of-the-art non-intrusive body scanners at both the Owen Roberts International Airport (ORIA) and at the Charles Kirkconnell International Airport (CKIA) in Cayman Brac.  The move comes as the authorities saw a need to further enhance both national security and the security and safety of both residents and visitors with the Islands' community.

The successful installation involves the implementation of two Soter RS X-ray body scanners at the Cayman Islands Airport for the Customs and Border Control Service. These advanced scanners, developed by OD Security, are designed to detect illicit drugs and other contraband inside and outside the body using a very low dose of X-ray, enhancing the airport's security measures.

According to local media outlet, Cayman Marl Road, "Those passengers deemed to pose a high risk for internally concealing prohibited or restricted goods will be subject to being scanned."

The same source also cites comments from the Minister for Border Control, Labour & Culture Hon. Dwayne Seymour as saying, “The introduction of non-invasive body scanners represents a monumental leap forward in our efforts to maintain the highest standards of border security. This technology enhances our ability to detect and prevent drug smuggling and ensures a safe and secure environment for all travellers.”

According to OD Security, the Customs and Border Control Service has expressed its satisfaction with the performance of OD Security and the partners involved, Installation Technology International (ITI) and AVCOM. The collaborative effort ensured the scanners were installed efficiently and effectively.

Commenting on the implementation of the new scanners, the Director of CBC, Charles Clifford, was also reported to have said, “The installation of these advanced scanners showcases CBC’s commitment to utilizing innovative solutions to tackle emerging security challenges. By adopting this technology, we reaffirm our dedication to protecting our borders and safeguarding the wellbeing of our citizens.”
